Artwork Car Painting Evolution on Electile Dysfunction Theme

Given that Charlie Sheen’s 15 minutes of fame waned last fall we needed to re-theme the car to make it stand out.  Since we wanted to run two Lemons races this year (the Loudon Annoying and October Hooptiefest) we needed a theme that would last the whole year (if not longer).

Back in early spring in the midst of the brutal Republican primary I threw out the idea of “Gingrinch for Prez” as a theme that would include painting the entire car lime green (so it would stand out on track), painting a caricature of Gingrich on the hood and include some Seuss-ified quotes Gingrich has made on the campaign trail.  Initial response was good, but Jonathan Porath wanted to improve the idea and after mulling it around for a bit sent out the following describing his idea for a theme.

Subject: [24lemons] Of hoods, paint and other crap 

This is unquestionably the worst photoshop job I have ever done, but
what the hell. At least it gives you an idea of what's going on. The 
Gingrinch has been abandoned in favor of Electile Dysfunction 2012 
sponsored by (D)iagra and (R)ialis, now available in SuperPacs. This 
image was created using the very rough first draft sketch, poorly 
photographed in bad light and hastily colored using shoddy techniques.
I can assure you that I will put considerably more effort into the the 
real thing and that the finished job on the hood is going to come out 
much, much worse.

The plan for the sides is going to be blue with white stars on one
side and wavy red and white stripes on the other. This is easier to do
than straight stripes and hides poor masking, dented body work and
dripping paint much better. We'll letter the sides with Electile
Dysfunction 2012 along with a (R)iagra and (D)ialis (oh whatever, I'm
not going to retype the stupid things) pill.  There will be a dire
warning that "Should you experience an Electile lasting for more than
four years, it may be a symptom of PriorPres syndrome and you should
probably start drinking heavily and take a long nap." Or something.

Prep work for the body is going to be straightforward to the point of 
being nearly nonexistent. Scotchbright the existing paint, such as it 
is. Degrease, mask, a perfunctory swipe with a tack cloth that I've
been storing in my cat litter box, spray, wait, remask, spray, remask
spray, marvel at how wonderful it looks from a great distance.

That's my phoney baloney plan anyway.

Oh, as to the question that's haunting you right now: the numbers.

Needless to say the team was enthusiastic for the theme.

Preparation and Painting Process of the Electile Dysfunction Theme Hood

Jonathan and I live in the same town and got together to prep and paint the hood.  I helped with the taping and prep while Jonathan used his talents with an airbrush to paint the hood over the next month.

Our plan was to do all the work using “rattle cans” (Rustoleum acrylic enamel spray cans) not only to keep the costs down, but to make it look just “good enough” (its a lemons car after all). Initially we used blue painter’s tape and frisket to lay out the background and Mr. Monopely but it was tedious to get used to:

Frisket and tape worked, but was time consuming and occasionally would lift paint (since we didn’t have enough time between steps to let the paint fully cure).  After searching around, Jonathan found Stickey Mickey’s which saved us lots of time with mask layout:

After laying paper to protect the rest of the hood Jon airbrushed in shadows on the bags:

And added dollar signs to show American politics are awash in campaign cash:

Lettering came next.  We wanted to use frisket (since we could print letter outlines on them) to mask the letters but it was difficult since the ink would barely stick and care had to be used in cutting the letters after they were applied, but the results made us really happy.  Combined with the floating pills the hood was complete:

Preparation and Painting of the Car Body

Now the car body.  The only prep work done on the body was to Scotch Brite the exterior and give it a wash since anything more would be overkill.  Our plan was to continue the red white and blue theme from the hood to the rest of the car body.  Since white had to come before blue (we could mask out the white stars and shoot all the blue in one shot) we decided to shoot white first.  Fortunately Lee Malo allowed us to use his Advanced Technologies shop after hours to shoot the car (all the taping was done outside and we rolled the car in just to shoot it). I have to admit, after shooting the white the car had a split personality.  On the right side it looked like a zebra with the white stripes and on the left it looked like a cow with the spots where the stars would be masked out:

The white rectangular areas on the doors/roof are where our car number (667) will go.  We left the car in the shop overnight to allow the paint to set and then put it outside for a few days to let it cure (we didn’t want the painter’s tape pulling up any of the fresh paint) when we came back to shoot the red:

Again we left the car int hs shop overnight to allow the paint to set and came back a few days later to complete the blue.  Since the blue would cover the entire half of the car I had to stop by a few Autozone stores on the north shore to find enough paint (we planned on using six cans).  I’m sure the cashier thought I was up to no good by buying so much paint and telling them I was painting a car (what, they thought I was planning to tag the town?!?).  After laying light coat upon coat and pulling the masks off we installed the hood and started giggling when we stepped back and looked at the result.

Hopefully we can get some mileage out of this theme, and make it last for a few years since I don’t see politics improving anytime soon. 😉   With an event scheduled just prior to elections it could be interesting on and off the track.
